From alcoholic to author…

Rose Ann was a successful C-Suite executive and ministry leader in the church. She was a working mom of four and a social drinker. Over the years, life’s stresses and a difficult marriage created an environment where her alcohol usage increased significantly. After the collapse of her marriage, her drinking further escalated and she felt like a fraud with God and the Church. AA was not an option in her mind. She had already submitted to God and didn’t want to call herself an alcoholic. When COVID-19 hit, she enrolled in a coaching program to put alcohol to the side for three months. The rest has been an incredible journey of redemption and healing. This interview will impact your life in ways unimaginable. “Redemption: A Story of Overcoming Addiction and Finding Faith”

In this episode of “The Survivor” podcast, host Amanda Blackwood invites John Jarman to share his incredible story of redemption. John’s childhood was plagued with abuse and trauma, and at a young age, he turned to drugs to survive. However, at the age of 23, he had an epiphany that there must be more to life than the path he was on. He decided to join the Marine Corps, which turned out to be the best decision he ever made.

Here are three takeaways from John’s story that can inspire listeners to keep pushing through difficult times:

  1. It’s never too late to turn your life around. John didn’t make the decision to change until he was 23, and he had already been involved in drugs for years. However, he was able to make a complete 180 and start a new chapter in his life.
  2. Sometimes, the best thing we can do for ourselves is to ask for help. John recognized that he needed a way out and turned to the Marine Corps for help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it takes strength to admit that we can’t do it alone.
  3. Faith can play a big role in our lives. John attributes much of his success to his faith in God, which gave him the strength and motivation to turn his life around.

So if you’re looking for an inspiring story of redemption, this episode of “The Survivor” is a must-listen. As Amanda says, “It’s a very powerful message. I think a lot of people need that in their lives right now.”

Quote from the episode: “And 2 days later, I walked into a marine recruiting office. And I said, hey, how fast can you get me out of [this city]? And the recruiter said, did you commit a crime? And I was like, yes. But I’ve never been caught.”

What You Should Know

People don’t seem to get this: Perception is NOT always reality.

It might seem like I’ve got it all together and I’m sitting on top of the world, but there are days when it’s hard to get out of bed because of chronic illness, chronic hives, thyroid disease, Crohn’s disease, lack of motivation, chronic fatigue, or any number of other things. I’m WAY more put together than I was a decade ago, but that doesn’t mean I’m perfect, or that my life is.

I’m still only human.

The Hives Have Returned

Today is the worst yet for the return of the hives. I woke up around 4am sobbing from the pain of it all, and remembering how at one point I’d been living like this – DAILY – for over two years. I didn’t want to do that again. I couldn’t stand the thought of it. The first photo was from 4am when I was seeking out ANY remedy I could. I’m already taking twice the recommended dose of Allegra with Pepcid at every intake, and added a Claritin into the mix at 4am. This is considered an overdose of antihistamines, and I’ll be speaking to an allergist again very soon.

Now is when I get aggressive with treatments once more. I wanted to put this off for a few more weeks because the astronomical costs associated with treatment would drive a financially unstable person into bankruptcy in short order. Thankfully, that’s not us. We aren’t unstable. But we might end up broke from this.

One of my three autoimmune diseases isn’t always invisible.

(Once more, PLEASE refrain from offering medical advice. I’ve been dealing with this since 2019 – it’s not an allergic reaction and ALL of the home remedies have been attempted. They do not work for this condition.)

Born on the Run

When he was born, his father was on the run from the law because of a violent altercation in the US. That was the perfect set up for a traumatic childhood and young adult life. But after a nearly fatal incident when his children were very young, this courageous man decided it was time to learn how to fight back in healthy ways. Now he works with at-risk (or at-promise) youth to help them make better choices than he did as a child himself.
